For many rural villages across Essex, the loss of the local store is a familiar story. When the old village shop and Post Office at Crown Hill closed its doors in May 2019, Ashdon lost more than just a place to buy a pint of milk or post a parcel; it lost an everyday community anchor.

For over seven years, villagers have adapted, relying on trips into Saffron Walden, deliveries, or catching the weekly mobile Post Office van outside the Baptist Chapel. But there is nothing quite like having a proper, physical shop within walking distance, where shelves are filled with good food and familiar faces are behind the counter.

The Rose & Crown in Ashdon

That long wait is officially coming to an end.

On Wednesday 23rd September, a brand-new chapter begins as Ashdon Farm Shop opens its doors at Crown Hill.

A Nod to Tradition, Built for the Future

It feels entirely fitting that this revival is taking place right back at Crown Hill, just steps away from where the previous shop served generations of residents.

The new building has been designed to sit harmoniously within its rural surroundings. Clad in traditional Essex Black wooden cladding over a red-brick plinth, it echoes the heritage weatherboarding found on agricultural barns throughout the region. Beneath that classic exterior, however, sits modern sustainability: a roof array of solar panels powers daily operations, ensuring this new community hub is built with an eye firmly on the future.

Chef-Led and Locally Rooted

Ashdon Farm Shop is a collaboration born out of the Rose and Crown, led by the Rose & Crown’s owners alongside chefs Liam and Fran Grime. Bringing culinary expertise directly to the retail counter, the focus is squarely on artisan quality and true field-to-fork provenance.

Rather than just standard pantry staples, visitors can expect:

  • Handmade Deli Favourites: Artisan pies, quiches, scotch eggs, and sausage rolls, prepared fresh on-site by our kitchen team.
  • Elite Local Producers: Partnerships with trusted regional suppliers, including fresh meat from Priors Hall, paired with seasonal fruit, vegetables, and everyday essentials.
  • Exceptional British Cheeses: A curated counter featuring renowned regional varieties such as Keen’s Cheddar, Wild Garlic Yarg, Burt’s Blue, Cotswold Brie, and Cotswold Smoked Brie.
  • On-the-Go Convenience: Barista-made hot drinks and fresh lunch options tailored for school runs, dog walkers, home workers, and weekend cyclists exploring the lanes.

Shaped by the Community

From the earliest stages of planning, the goal was never just to open a shop, it was to open the village's shop. Over the summer, local residents, commuters, and pub diners took the time to complete questionnaires to guide everything from shelf selection to opening times.

The result is a space crafted to meet the daily rhythms of village life, offering both the practical essentials you need mid-week and the artisan indulgences you want for the weekend.

The decorating is done, the shelves are being stocked, and we are counting down the days. Come along on Wednesday 23rd September to celebrate the return of a village store to Ashdon and support a truly local endeavour.
